Bioconstruction in commercial environments: health and sustainability where it is most needed

Applying healthy criteria in offices, supermarkets, and urban restaurants

Bioconstruction is not just for rural homes.
It can — and should — also be applied in spaces where we spend many hours a day: shops, offices, restaurants, or supermarkets.

At Ecohabitats, we believe that commercial environments should be healthy, efficient, and consistent with the values of the brands that occupy them.
And that starts with the architecture.

What does applying bioconstruction in a commercial space involve?

  • Distributing logically to promote natural ventilation and fluid user flow
  • Choosing materials that do not emit toxins or overheat the interior environment
  • Taking care of the acoustics, natural or warm lighting, and the sensation of passive thermal comfort
  • Reducing the mechanical load: less forced air conditioning, more insulation and intelligent orientation
  • Using respectful construction systems also in the execution (less dust, noise, waste)

Offices and supermarket with bioconstruction criteria

In the Veritas Diputació project, we transformed a 2,400 m² space into three distinct areas: offices, a supermarket, and a restaurant.

We applied bioconstruction solutions such as:

  • Open layouts for lighting and cross ventilation
  • Recyclable and low-impact materials
  • Lightweight and demountable interior separations
  • Healthy showcooking areas with spatial logic

Renovating in shopping centers: another way to consume

In La Maquinista and Glòries, we designed and executed two premises for Veritas in the heart of the commercial area. There, it was also possible to apply:

  • Finishes without PVC or toxic resins
  • Highly durable but breathable coatings
  • Efficient lighting adapted to fresh products
  • Spatial ergonomics to improve the customer experience

Healthy spaces, also at work

In all these cases, the objective is not only aesthetic or functional. It is to project from an ethic of health and sustainability.

Because it is also bioconstruction when those who work 8 hours in a supermarket breathe better, are less exposed to chemicals, and move in spaces designed for their well-being.
